Children have shorter sleep cycles (50 to 70 minutes) and require more rest. Select their age below to find their optimal bedtime.

Why Children's Sleep Cycles Are Different
Many parents assume that children have the same 90-minute sleep cycles as adults, but this is a scientific misconception. Pediatric sleep biology differs significantly in both structure and length:
Shorter Cycles
Infants and toddlers have sleep cycles that last only 50 minutes. As children grow, their cycle length slowly extends—preschoolers average 60 minutes, and school-aged children average 70 minutes, only reaching adult 90-minute cycle lengths in their late teens.
More REM Sleep
Babies and children spend a much higher percentage of their sleep time in REM (active) sleep. REM sleep is critical for early brain development, synapses creation, and learning processing. This is why kids wake up more easily during the night.
Consistent Bedtimes
A child's circadian rhythm is highly sensitive. Maintaining a consistent bedtime and morning wake time—even on weekends—promotes growth hormone release, improves daytime behavior, and helps them fall asleep much faster.
Pediatric Sleep Guidelines
Below are the official recommended hours of daily sleep (including naps) from the American Academy of Pediatrics:
| Age Group | Recommended Sleep | Cycle Length | Waking Symptoms of Deficit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infants (4-11 mos) | 12 to 15 hours | ~50 minutes | Excessive crying, rubbing eyes, zoning out |
| Toddlers (1-2 yrs) | 11 to 14 hours | ~50 minutes | Hyperactivity, daytime tantrums, resisting bedtime |
| Preschool (3-5 yrs) | 10 to 13 hours | ~60 minutes | Aggressive behaviors, morning grogginess, clumsiness |
| School-Age (6-13 yrs) | 9 to 11 hours | ~70 minutes | Lack of concentration, poor grades, moodiness |
